tasks

The tasks of the fire brigade at the TU include above all fire protection and fire fighting on the Garching campus, but also general fire brigade-typical assistance, for example in the event of traffic accidents. The focus of activity is fire protection training and breathing protection training for TU employees, acceptance of fire alarm systems , maintenance of 3,000 fire extinguishers and checking of hydrants on campus.

Since the former research reactor in Munich (known as the "atomic egg") and the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz research neutron source are among the objects to be looked after, the TU firefighters have special training in radiation protection .

In the event of major incidents , the TU fire brigade also supports units of the Garching volunteer fire brigade and the Munich fire brigade and vice versa. The ambulance is also used by the control centers in Erding and Munich.

history

In 1967 demands were made that the university should organize the fire protection and rescue service itself for the research area of the Technical University of Munich, which was inaugurated in 1957 in the north of Garching, and set up a plant fire brigade for this purpose . Expert opinions and legal audits were carried out until the Faculty of Chemistry had a new building built in 1975-78. At the same time, the nuclear law was tightened, which resulted in higher requirements for the operational readiness of rescue services at the research reactor. For this reason, the head of the Munich professional fire brigade was appointed advisor and organizer of the development of a fire brigade for the TU. It goes back to this time that the university fire brigade can fall back on civil servants and is on an equal footing with the public professional fire brigades .

In 1978, the first operational and managerial staff were hired and trained at the professional fire departments in Munich and Augsburg . Part of the building of the technical center of the thermal power station was converted into a fire station. In May 1979, 18 of the 48 officers required already met the requirements to be active in the fire service. On June 1, 1979, the first six-man guard began their 24-hour duty.

In March 1985, a newly built fire station could be moved into. In 1991, the university fire brigade was recognized as a plant fire brigade and in 1996 received an expanded operations center. At the beginning of 1999, it was decided to reorganize the fire brigade's vehicle concept in order to adapt it to changed requirements. In the course of this, a swap body system was introduced and an emergency fire engine was acquired. The plant fire brigade is a member of the Munich City Fire Brigade Association .
