Feurio! is a burning program specializing in audio CDs for the Windows operating system from Microsoft . It was developed by Jens Fangmeier, the first published version appeared in 1997 as beta version 0.90.

development

Up to version 0.935 Feurio appeared ! as freeware , but was intended as a beta version for testing and therefore only run up to a set date. When version 1.0 was released at the end of 1998, the " expiry date " was no longer applicable . At the same time, the program became shareware and has since been fully usable in the standard version. Up to the current version, Feurio! actively developed. However, since 2004 the development seems to have stopped. A newer version of Feurio! was developed, but no longer published due to possible complications with German copyright law.

Variants of the program

Basically there is only one installation version of Feurio! which can be activated as a standard version or as a professional version by entering the appropriate license key.

The shareware version is currently not restricted compared to the standard version. The professional version offers additional functions for simultaneous burning on several CD burners as well as for copying data CDs and for burning ISO images .

Applications

Feurio! consists of the individual programs “Feurio! CD Manager ”,“ Feurio! CD Writer ”,“ Feurio! Track editor ”and“ Feurio! Covereditor ". In addition, the program offers a CD player and a wave player.

Functions

That Feurio! specializes in audio CDs, a quick look at the range of functions of the program shows. In addition to the "CD Manager", in which you can compile your projects with WAV and MP3 files, it includes a CDDB query, CD-Text support, audio grabbing , a function for automatic control and a simple wave- Editor. Many functions are a matter of course in today's firing programs, in Feurio! it has been around for many years, some examples:

  • CD-Text support
  • Burning individual WAV compilations
  • Direct creation of MP3 files from CDs including ID3 tags
  • Burning of MP3 files to regular audio CDs, also " on-the-fly ", also conversion of "wrong bit rates " into an audio CD-compliant format
  • Copy and compile DTS CDs
  • Normalize audio tracks
  • Recording of tracks via the analog input of a sound card with creation of index marks
  • System analysis to detect driver conflicts of installed programs, including ASPI conflicts
  • Cover editor
  • Exceptionally good error correction when reading especially badly pressed CDs, 1: 1 copying of CDs including errors - if the error rate is too high , which is displayed in numbers, the speed of rotation of the source drive can also be reduced manually

CD manager

Projects can be created from .wav and / or .mp3 files in the CD manager . The files can be located on the hard drive and can be linked to the project from there, or a compilation of the titles of different CDs can be copied into the project. When integrating MP3 files, you can choose whether the files are to be converted into wave format "on the fly" during the burn process and at the same time normalized (i.e. their volume adjusted to one another) (historically: what happened in 1999 was not a matter of course at the time of Pentium II computers). The tracks can be loaded from the project into the track editor and z. B. set track marks, which is very helpful and easy to do after analog recording of records or cassettes from the CD manager. When grabbing audio CDs, it is possible to use a free external MP3 encoder, e.g. B. the LAME encoder (lameenc.dll) to create MP3 files directly, using the online CD databases freedb or CDDB or a downloaded freedb version to create the ID3 tags. The format of the tags can be individually defined.

CD writer

The CD-Writer is the burning module from Feurio! . It can handle a large number of common CD drives, but only the professional version can be used to copy data CDs and burn ISO images. In the standard version, only burning audio CDs is possible. Oversized blank CDs that deviate from the ANSI standard IEC-908 (“Red Book”) and can save more than 74 minutes, as well as overburning, are supported by the burning module. Feurio! can even handle 99-minute blanks, but it should be noted that not all CD drives on the computer support burning, playing or reading out such blanks, and most importantly that very few CD players support such audio CDs because they are far outside the CD-Audio specification (as defined in the “Red Book”).

The CD-Writer was one of the first programs to support burning CD-Text information. To do this, the program uses the information from the source CD or from the CD manager, which in turn gets its information from the offline version of freedb or from the online versions of CDDB or freedb. In addition to the actual burn function, the CD writer offers a wide range of diagnostic functions, e.g. B. to check system drivers or to determine the length of a blank CD in a simulation burning process, whereby the overburning of an excessively long CD project can be made safer. A data buffer can be set up in the CD writer, which enables safe burning even with burners without the " buffer underrun protection" function.

System requirements

Feurio! runs on every 32-bit Windows, i.e. Windows 9x from Windows 95 . However, NT-based Windows versions such as Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 are recommended . The program requires comparatively little computer power. A Pentium -90 with 32  MB RAM is sufficient , from Windows NT at least 64 MB RAM. Despite its relative age, Feurio! in version 1.68 can be operated with Windows 7 (32-bit) and Windows Vista (32-bit) without any problems , although Windows Vista warns of a possible incompatibility during installation. The program also works largely without problems under Windows 7 x64 (64-bit), but playing tracks in the track editor does not work on some hardware configurations. This problem can be avoided by using a virtual machine such as the XP mode of Windows 7 Professional / Enterprise. Feurio! also runs under Windows 8 , 8.1 and 10 (64-bit), the playback mode in the track editor works depending on the hardware configuration.
