The Figural Choir of the Gedächtniskirche Stuttgart is a church and concert choir in the Gedächtnis- und Rosenberggemeinde in Stuttgart-Nord . It has been under the direction of Alexander Burda since September 2009. The name of the figural choir is derived from figural music , that is, contrapuntal music as it originated in Europe from the 14th century .
The figural choir creates the liturgical music ( liturgy ) of the larger festivals in the church year at the Memorial Church and also continues the tradition of cantata services , which are open to interested singers. Choral symphonic works are performed in two oratorical concerts per year.
history
The Figural Choir of the Gedächtniskirche Stuttgart was founded in 1957 by Helmuth Rilling , who directed it until the 1970s. As a cantor at the Gedächtniskirche, he set a new focus on church music with his spiritual evening music , the cyclical performances of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and cantatas and Christmas services that go beyond the usual liturgical framework. In doing so, he laid the foundation for the lasting tradition of church music at the Memorial Church and the great importance that it enjoys in the community, which continues to this day.
As a result, several Rilling students took over the choir. B. the Americans Henry Gibbons and Gordon Plaine. Johannes Moesus followed for many years until Peter Bachofer took over the management in 1990 and handed it over to Alexander Burda in September 2009.
Poster series
The posters for the concerts of the figural choir were designed and implemented by the Stuttgart graphic designer Tilman Ockert, who also created the appearance of the choir.
repertoire
The repertoire of the figural choir consists mainly of sacred choral music from the 16th to the 21st century. In particular, the repertoire of the 20th century has recently been expanded into the present. At the Stuttgart Night 2011 in the Stiftskirche, the Benedictus by the French composer Emmanuel Robin was performed for the first time in Stuttgart as part of a program with motets from the 20th century . In addition, a concert in 2010 exclusively performed works by contemporary Stuttgart composers (Axel Ruoff, Willibald Bezler , Jürgen Essl, Klaus Dreher).
