The Maria Fieberbründl branch church is located in the Maria Fieberbründl pilgrimage site in Kaibing in the Feistritztal community in Styria . The pilgrimage church of the Birth of Mary in the parish church of Sankt Johann bei Herberstein belongs to the deanery Gleisdorf in the diocese of Graz-Seckau . The church building is a listed building .

history

At first there was a simple wooden chapel with a statue of the Virgin Mary near a spring. With a financial foundation (1864) an attempt was made, in agreement with the landowner Michael Rosenberger from Kaibing, to build a brick chapel there. From 1879 to 1894, however, the new building was built according to the plans of Robert Mirkowics with master bricklayer Johann Lang from Pischelsdorf on the neighboring property of Johann Hirzer from Kaibing. The local master carpenter especially for the bell tower was Josef Falk. The painting work was done by Adam Zingl from Kaibing. The chapel was consecrated on October 26th, 1879 to Maria im Elend , the day of patronage was put on September 8th for the birth of the Virgin Mary. Due to the new construction of the chapel, the landowner of the wooden chapel decided to build a small neo-baroque chapel, which was also completed in 1879, on the site of the wooden chapel that had been demolished. In order to avoid injustice, this chapel was also consecrated on October 26, 1897 to Maria am Fieberbründl . The Maria-im-Elend chapel was owned by the Kaibing community and in 1882 became the church's property and was elevated to a branch church of the parish church of Sankt Johann bei Herberstein. Answers to prayer from 1880 to 1883 made the church a pilgrimage church in Eastern Styria and the area of southern Burgenland. The first St. Mass of the branch church was on December 27th, 1882, already in 1883 there was a mass license for all days of the week, from 1938 also for Sundays and public holidays with the exception of the main festivals, until 1951 all restrictions were lifted. The small Maria-am-Fieberbründl chapel initially served as a sacristy until a separate sacristy was added to the branch church in 1885. In 1893/1894 a 15 m long prayer hall in the style of a nave with an open roof was built on the site of the Maria-am-Fieberbründl chapel as an extension of the branch church, according to the plans of the master builder Heinrich Loetz from Graz. What is remarkable, however, is that a distance of 7 m has been kept free between the two structures. The circumstance is unclear, but possibly arose because the prayer hall was used by many pilgrims for overnight stays. In 1912 and 1929 Johann Zingl made interior renovations out of Kaibing. In 1936 the roof of the chapel was renewed. On May 1, 1953, the pilgrimage church was taken over by the Vienna Province of the Capuchin Order . In 1954, according to a plan by Karl Lebwohl , the master builder Michael Mitterböck from Pischelsdorf and the carpentry Kober from Hirnsdorf, the church and the prayer hall were structurally connected to a transept to form a single building. Above the new south portal stands the figure of the Madonna in a protective coat by the sculptor Pabst (1954). The church was rededicated on November 14, 1954. In 1957 the exterior was renovated. In 1967 the forecourt was expanded. The interior was renovated for the 90th anniversary (1969). In 1975 the facade was repainted.

Church building

In 1954, the former squat chapel was changed significantly as a central building with transept-like gables and neo-romantic round arch friezes with a central ridge tower. The bell tower was relocated and placed above the new, slightly higher intermediate building. The architecture of the former prayer hall and now the nave is remarkable. Above a base zone made of ashlar masonry, the facade shows a rectangular rustication in rough plaster with pilasters and arched windows. The gable facade with strong corner pillars has an aedicula portal with columns and capitals with disc cubes with angel heads and vegetable friezes.

The elongated, single-aisle, light-flooded hall also has flat pilasters inside. The open rafter roof with a standing chair stands on carved wall brackets. A round arch leads into the transept with a barrel vault. A simple music gallery was built in at the south entrance. Another round arch leads into the one-bay choir from 1879 under a groined vault and a retracted apse.

Furnishing

The facility shows itself in historicist forms. Votive pictures are located behind the high altar and on the music gallery. A separate Bründl chapel was built in 1978 for more recent votive pictures. The fountain statue is from 1954. There are paintings by Franz Weiss (1978) in the Chapel of Grace .
