The St. Georgen im Schauertal branch church is a pilgrimage church in Forstberg in the Fischlham municipality in Upper Austria in the Wels-Land district . The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Georg of the parish church Fischlham belongs to the deanery Pettenbach in the diocese of Linz . The church is a listed building .

geography

The church is located by a small pond into which several springs flow. A spring supplies the water for the “Brünndl”, which the population used to attribute healing properties to.

history

The prehistory of the church is in the dark, as it was owned by a nobleman as a separate church and was therefore not originally part of a parish network. It was first mentioned in documents in 1414. The oldest part of the church still preserved today is the choir vault from the 14th century. The extensive, lavishly restored Secco paintings from 1390 indicate the importance of the church as a medieval pilgrimage church. The church received extensive renovations and fittings in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

Surname

The pilgrimage church is dedicated to St. Georg , who was worshiped in the Middle Ages for his heroism in the fight against evil. The name Schauertal refers to the two neighboring farms that were called "Schaur im Tal" in the 15th century.

architecture

The originally Gothic church with one nave was modified in 1730, 1746 and 1878. The gable roof carries a ridge turret in the west. The nave has a flat ceiling. The recessed lower cross-rib vaulted choir is square.

The medieval wall and ceiling painting is executed as secco painting. From 1993 to 1996 they were exposed and secured. In terms of content, the frescoes are dedicated to the fourteen helpers in need. The church patron is in the choir on the north wall in the fresco of St. To see Georg in the dragon fight . The depiction shows the saint fighting the dragon, who is being watched by the kneeling king's daughter. The princess' belt can be seen in the fresco as a thin line that leads from her arms to the dragon's neck. On the eastern wall of the choir are St. Leonhard and St. Antony depicted. Both saints were especially venerated in rural areas as patron saints of farm animals. Head and face of St. Leonhard are the best preserved parts of the frescoes.

Furnishing

The high altar was created in 1715 and was transferred here in 1995 as the former side altar of the Fischlham parish church . The altarpiece (around 1700) shows St. Georg fighting the dragon. The picture comes from the broken baroque altar that was in the church until 1878. The side altars were built by Sebastian Gründler around 1658 to 1661 and have been heavily renovated. On the right side altar is a Gothic seated figure of St. Peter from the end of the 14th century.
