The branch church of St. Martin bei Niedertrixen in the municipality of Völkermarkt , first mentioned in a document in 1332, belongs to the parish of St. Stefan bei Niedertrixen .

Building description

The small Romanesque building with a round apse dates from the 12th century. On the eastern nave , the church is crowned by a mighty roof turret with twin windows and a pointed helmet. A Gothic sacristy and a vestibule built around 1650 are added to the south of the nave . The roofs of the church are covered with Steinplattl. The late Gothic St. Christopher fresco on the south wall was painted in the middle of the 16th century, alongside fragmentary remains of a preliminary drawing for an older St. Christopher fresco from the early 14th century. Wickerwork stones installed in the vestibule are copies of originals from the 8th century, which are now kept in the district home museum in Völkermarkt. A Roman marble polish with an incised mill game is walled into the floor . At the side of the entrance hangs a wooden crucifix from the 18th century. The church is entered through a simple Romanesque step portal. Another Romanesque arched gate on the north wall is walled up. A flat wooden coffered ceiling from the 19th century spans the nave. The late Gothic west gallery over star ridge vaults has a stone parapet structured by rectangular fields. Some of the window openings in the nave have been enlarged; Romanesque windows have been preserved on the western north wall and in the apse. An iron-studded door leads into the groin-vaulted sacristy. A fresco of the Last Judgment painted around 1650 can be seen on the nave wall . In 1999, another fresco on the same subject was uncovered, dated around 1515. This is followed by fragments of king worship from the 16th century. Another painting comes from the Baroque and shows the beneficial effects of the sacrament of death .

Facility

The high altar from 1684 has a triumphal arch-like structure over a small base, with a blown segmented gable and a niche as an attachment. The column shafts are decorated with vines. It is flanked by two late Gothic figures from the beginning of the 16th century, which depict the saints Rupert and Nicholas . In the top the statues of Saints Alexius and Michael form the crown. The left side altar from 1711 contains a statue of Maria Immaculata . The brick pulpit stands on a pillar foundation.
