The parish church of St. Stefan near Niedertrixen in the municipality of Völkermarkt was first named in a St. Paul tradition code as Maximilian's church around 1200 . In 1231 the church was incorporated into the Völkermarkt collegiate chapter and the patronage changed. The branch churches of St. Martin and Wandelitzen belong to the parish .

Building description

The church is essentially a Romanesque building that was changed in the Gothic and Baroque periods . The church consists of a nave and a choir with a straight end. To the south of the nave is a sacristy and a porch with the staircase to the gallery. The late Gothic tower north of the choir has rich, three-lane tracery windows and is crowned by a hexagonal pointed helmet. A grenade from the time of the Carinthian defensive battle is preserved next to the southern sound window . The bell was cast by Georg Fiering in 1603. The roof is covered with stone slabs.

On the southern outer wall of the ship there are significant remains of wall paintings, which were hidden by the roof of the sacristy and are now visible from the vestibule. The frescoes painted around 1440/50 show parts of Genesis , the Mount of Olives scene , the capture of Christ and the Man of Sorrows , surrounded by four saints and tendril ornaments.

A large square vault from the late 18th century spans the nave, and a transversely oblong square over the baroque organ gallery from the 17th century. The gallery itself rests in three axes on pillars and is arched under with spaces between belt arches . The gallery parapet swings forward slightly. A round arched triumphal arch connects the nave with the choir. The choir square is vaulted with a ribbed vault from the 14th century, the southern sacristy with a needle cap barrel. The heavily overpainted ceiling paintings in the nave probably date from the Baroque period and show the coronation of Mary with the four evangelists in the spandrels . Painted cartouches with putti heads can be seen in the vaulted caps of the choir . 1996/97 a 1423/24 was painted on the east wall of the choir holiday Christ exposed, derived from a South Tyrolean hiking Malerwerkstätte from the vicinity of the brothers Erasmus and Christopher of Brunico and also in Tainach worked. On the south wall a cycle of apostles painted in 1424/25 depicting the apostles Matthias , Johannes and Simon .

Facility

The high altar was made around 1670/1680 and supplemented in the 18th century. It consists of an aedicule with a staggered double column over a small base with large consoles. A small aedicula forms the attachment above the segment gable. In the shrine are the baroque statues of Saints Sebastian and Laurentius , in the essay Saint Joseph . The top is the figure of the risen Christ.

The two side altars date from the middle of the 18th century. The left altar bears a statue of the Virgin Mary from the 19th century and the baroque statues of Saints Joachim and Anna . On the right altar are the sculptures of Saints Sebastian, Leonhard and Rochus from the middle of the 18th century.

Other furnishings include a monumental crucifix from the Holy Cross Chapel near Thalenstein, a mourning Mary and a Maria Magdalena from a Baroque crucifixion group , a baptismal font with a profiled shaft from around 1480 and a pulpit from the second half of the 18th century.

Karner

Karner

The Karner southeast of the church is an early Gothic rotunda with buttresses, a semicircular consolapis, lancet windows and a pointed arched portal. A Last Judgment from the second quarter of the 15th century can be seen on the south side . Inside, the Karner is vaulted by a six-part ribbed dome. The upper floor serves as a war memorial and a mortuary.

A Roman epitaph for the locals Lotucus, Medsiecus, Spetatus and Sura is immured in the cemetery wall.
