The branch church of St. Michael

The St. Michael branch church stands on a steep, wooded hill east of the village of St. Michael in the municipality of Villach . The church belonging to the Roman Catholic parish Maria Landskron was first mentioned in 1431. In 1494, together with Landskron Castle , it was given to the Order of the Knights of St. George for maintenance and in 1511 to its own.

Building description

The church is a small, Romanesque building with a small semicircular apse , a western porch over brick corner pillars and an eastern roof turret with a curved pointed helmet. Small, Romanesque windows have been preserved in the apse. The mural of St. Christopher on the south wall was heavily renewed in 1979 by Kurt Campidell . To the left of the west portal is a Roman period relief with a kantharos and tree of life as well as a Roman period grave inscription for the locals Bacacu, Arimanus, Arion and Cotun.

The two-axis nave with a wooden ceiling has a wooden west gallery and a round-arched triumphal arch. The semicircular apse has a barrel vault with a semi-dome.

Facility

The small Gothic winged altar with pinnacles and branch decorations was created around 1505. The painting on the predella shows the handkerchief of Christ held by angels . The top painting with the Man of Sorrows comes from the workshop of the Saint Veronica painter . One belonging to the altar statue of St. Michael from the older Villach Schnitzwerkstätte , the newly adopted was, and a Romanesque crucifix from the early 12th century with renewed, right arm are kept in the parish church of Landskron. The church also has two paintings of St. Michael and the Coronation of Mary from 1686.
