filmform - the third program

filmform - the third program is an appeal written in 1957 by the Herbert Vesely, Haro Senft and Heiner Braun production group in Munich to establish responsible and artistic film production in the Federal Republic of Germany .

Based on foreign developments such as “Cinema Nuovo”, “ Free Cinema ” and “ Nouvelle Vague ”, and on the other hand the expansion of the broadcasters to include “Third Programs”, the aim was a cultural base independent of consumption for the realization of ambitious endeavors to accomplish. This did not seem possible within the organizations of the German film industry.

The main prerequisites for this were listed:

  • Artistic freedom
  • Economic independence
(by reducing production costs, opening up old and new rental and playback options at home and abroad)
  • A board of trustees
(as a competent, advisory institution similar to the "British Film Institute" and the "Creative Film Foundation" New York )

The appeal was listed in a fold-out brochure and sent to around 100 other cultural-political and film-related institutions in Germany and abroad.

The program content was essentially continued by the filmmaker group “ DOC 59 ”, founded in Munich in April 1959 , which initiated the “ Oberhausen Manifesto ” of 1962 under the direction of Haro Senft .
