The Woolly chickweed ( Cerastium tomentosum ) is a plant of the genus cerastium ( Cerastium ) in the family of Caryophyllaceae (Caryophyllaceae).
features
The felty hornwort is an evergreen, creeping runners-forming, perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 30 (rarely up to 45) centimeters. She is covered with thick white felt hair, her hair is unbranched. The leaves are up to 30 millimeters long and linear to lanceolate. The inflorescences consist of up to 15 flowers . The cup is 5 to 7 millimeters long. The petals are white and twice as long as the calyx. The teeth of the capsule are slightly curved outwards.
The flowering period extends from May to July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36, 72 or 108.
Occurrence
The felty hornwort occurs in central and southern Italy on slopes.
Systematics
The variety Cerastium tomentosum var. Columnae (Ten.) Arcang. is often cultivated. It is silvery white and has rolled up leaf margins.
use
The felty hornwort is widely used as an ornamental plant for rock gardens and as a ground cover. The species has been in culture since at least 1620. It is often feral from the culture.
