The Fina-Raffinerie Duisburg was a large refinery operated by Fina in Duisburg - Neuenkamp .
The north-west oil pipeline from Wilhelmshaven ensured that the refinery was supplied with oil . The refinery was primarily built to process crude oils from the Middle East. The capacity of the refinery was 1.3 million t in 1960 and rose to 2.5 million t in 1972.
It included a 250-meter-high chimney , which was built in 1981 and was the tallest chimney in an oil refinery in Germany. This chimney, designed as a central chimney, brought together all the exhaust gas flows from process ovens.
In December 1988 the refinery was shut down and converted into a large tank farm. At that time there were plans to convert the chimney, which was also known as ERD chimney (ERD = Erdölraffinerie Duisburg), into an observation tower with an observation platform. However, none of these plans were realized and so it was dismantled in 1997 piece by piece. Demolition by blasting would have been too dangerous because of the dense development.
