Finch West is an underground subway station in Toronto . It lies on the Yonge-University line of the Toronto Subway , at the corner of Finch Avenue West and Keele Street.

station

The station is being built under Keele Street. The main entrance is to the northeast of the intersection and there is a side entrance on the northwest side. The postmodern station building was designed by a consortium led by the architectural firm Spadina Group Associates . Its walls are decorated with a barcode- like pattern. The second floor serves as a substation and protrudes over the entrance area, which is also accentuated by light strips. The roof is green . The Scottish artist Bruce McLean designed sculpture-like pillars in the entrance area, on the underground central platform and in the attached bus station . To the north of the station there is a park-and-ride with 347 chargeable parking spaces.

history

Even before construction began, the location of the Finch West station caused a political controversy. The Globe and Mail newspaper reported in March 2006 that real estate companies owned by the family of Ontario Treasury Secretary Greg Sorbara owned properties immediately south of the intersection of Finch Avenue West and Keele Street. These companies would benefit from the rising land prices that the construction of the subway extension would bring. Sorbara had previously campaigned vigorously for the implementation of this transport project.

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the extension of the Yonge University Line took place on November 27, 2009. The actual tunnel boring work began in June 2011. To make room for the future bus station, Toronto Fire Services' 141 Fire Station on Keele Street had to be demolished in 2012; a replacement was built across the street. The Finch West station opened on December 17, 2017.

In the medium term, Finch West will be the terminus of a light rail line . The Finch West LRT will be seven miles and head west to Humber College. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2018 and the opening is scheduled for 2022.
