Svantekah's boulder
The foundling Svantekahs (earlier and alternative spellings with lower frequency: Svantekas , Swantekahs , Sventekahs ) is located on the island of Rügen on the northwestern bank of the Jasmund peninsula near Ruschvitz, a district of Glowe , and is one of the legally protected geotopes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It was transported here from the Swedish Småland on the glaciers of the Last Ice Age .
Size and texture
According to the registration document of the State Office for Environment, Nature Conservation and Geology Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the boulder has a volume of 15 m³ and is 3.8 m long, 2 m wide and 2 m high and is located on the block beach about 900 m northwest of Ruschvitz. In the brochure "Protected boulders on the island of Rügen" published by the same state office in the same year, 4 m × 3 m × 2.5 m is assumed, which corresponds to a volume of 18 m³ and thus a mass of 49 tons.
The boulder consists of medium-grain Växjö granite . Due to its location in the direct surf zone - probably also due to frost blasting - it is exposed to increased erosion .
Surname
The origin of the name is controversial. Mostly Svantekahs in the sense of holy stone is derived from the Polabian language : swątë → svante = holy; scale , came = rock, rock. Another explanation is based on the regional earlier common word Kas (for an access channel for fishing boats to the beach) and Svente (for a place west of Ruschvitz that has long been desolate).
