Finlaggan Castle , also Eilean Mòr Castle , is a ruined castle on the island of Eilean Mòr in Finlaggan Loch , about 2 km northwest of Ballygrant on the island of Islay , part of the Scottish administrative unit Argyll and Bute . The fortified house was once the residence and fortress of the Lords of the Isles and the MacDonald clan .
The building was built in the 13th century from masonry, probably on the remains of an Iron Age fort . Finlaggan Castle served as a courthouse for the Lords of the Isles. Iain MacDonald, 3rd of Dunnyveg , and his son Iain Cathanach MacDonald were imprisoned at Finleggan Castle through the deception of MacIain of Ardnamurchan for the execution of the royal governor of Dunaverty Castle . These two and three grandchildren of Iain MacDonald were later tried and hung in Burgh Muir near Edinburgh . In 1541 Donald MacGilleasbuig held Finleggan Castle for the crown. The fortified house appears to have been destroyed in the 16th century.
