The Finlandia Foothills are a 16 km long and 5 km wide massif on Alexander I Island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . They tower on the western flank of the Sibelius Glacier . The highest peak at 1119 m is Dragon Peak .
The first aerial photographs were taken during the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948). These were used by the British geographer Derek Searle from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960 for mapping. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the massif in 1977 based on the naming of the Sibelius Glacier after the symphonic poem “ Finlandia ” by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius .
