The Finnafjörður (German also Finnafjord ) is the westernmost bay in Bakkaflói in northeast Iceland .

The area of Þórshöfn and Vopnafjörður can be reached via the Norðausturvegur , road 85 . There are plans to expand the fjord into a container port in the medium term that can be used for north polar routes.

According to plans by the Icelandic government, the Bremen port management company Bremenports is to receive 66 percent of the shares in the Finnafjord Port Project, the Icelandic engineering company EFLA based in Reykjavik 25 percent and the locally neighboring Icelandic communities Vopnafjörður and Langanesbyggð the rest. Investors are still being sought for individual plants. The great water depth and the relatively low wave height behind the Gunnólfsvíkurfjall on Langanes are further advantages of the bay.

The harbor quay will be up to six kilometers long. Fish farms, huge storage areas for container goods and transshipment points for natural resources from Greenland and the Arctic are planned on the site . A kind of hub for newly emerging trade routes through navigable north-west and north-east passages between America, Asia and Europe for the first time is the goal of the port project.
