Langanes is a peninsula in northeast Iceland .

The shape of the peninsula is reminiscent of a bird's head.

The most important place on the peninsula, which is located in the municipality of Langanesbyggð named after it , is Þórshöfn in the southwest . The farm and youth hostel Ytra-Lón is located 15 km northeast of Þórshöfn .

The road 869 , the Langanesvegur , starts at the road 85, the Norðausturvegur , leads through the place Þórshöfn, further to the airport Þórshöfn , to the former airport of Þórshöfn to the deserted place Skálar .

The area at the cape of the peninsula, especially at the Skoruvíkurbjarg bird cliff, is home to many birds, including terns and gannets ; on the cape itself, called Fontur , is the Langanesviti lighthouse, first built in 1910

The peninsula is largely deserted today, and you can find some abandoned farmsteads in the area. The area is now best known for bird watching.

The place Skálar was a fishing village in the 1920s and had more than 100 inhabitants. The place has been deserted since 1955. The Americans operated one of ten radar stations here during World War II.

In the mountain Heiðarfjall who entertained NATO from 1954 to 1968 a radar station . The short film Misty Mountain by Óskar Þór Axelsson tells a fictional story about it. Another radar station was set up by NATO in 1989 on Gunnólfsvíkurfjall, the highest mountain on the peninsula at 719 meters.
