There were four military radars in Iceland of NATO that the Americans were built.

  • During World War II , 10 radar stations installed by the British and the Americans monitored the airspace around Iceland.
  • Reykjanes The original station was north of Sandgerðisvegur, road 429, between Keflavík and Sandgerði with 2 radomes . Over 20 buildings belonged to this complex. The new station on the Miðnesheiði with a radome on a building is about 1.5 kilometers south.
  • Langanes The original station was at Heiðarfjall mountainfrom 1954 to 1968 with about 10 buildings and a radome. The current station is located on Gunnólfsvíkurfjall about 16 kilometers south-southwest.
  • Höfn On the headland of Stokksnes was this station with over 15 buildings, of which only one building with the radome is still standing. From the ring road , west of the Almannaskarð tunnel , there is a 6.5 kilometer road access.
  • Vestfirðir On the Straumnesfjall mountain, 40 kilometers north of Ísafjörður , this station operated until 1960. Now there are nine ruins left. A new station is located on the 638 meter high mountain Bolafjall 4 kilometers northwest of Bolungarvík . It opened on January 18, 1992.
  • Since 2005 only the Miðnesheiði / Reykjanes station has been manned, the other three stations work without a permanent crew.

The radar stations or their ruins can all be seen on the aerial map of Iceland.
