history

The Finngrundet was built in Gävle in 1903 . In ice-free times, it lay on the Finngrundbanks in the south of the Gulf of Bothnia . The design of the ship complies with international regulations, according to which lightships were to wear a bright red color and the station name, which is not always identical to the ship's name, had to be in white letters fore and aft. The Finngrundet is 31 meters long and 6.85 meters wide. Her draft is 3.1 meters. The ship's first beacon consisted of kerosene lamps and mirrors. The crew consisted of eight men. Contact with the outside world existed only via a pilot steamer that docked every 14 days, which brought food, fuel, mail and other necessities. The crew's job was to keep the beacon running. Maintenance work was done in the morning. As is customary in shipping, the day was divided into guards . The quite extensive leisure time of the individual crew members was spent, for example, fishing or carving.

In 1927 a renovation took place, whereby the beacon was switched to acetylene gas . The bell that had been used in fog up to that point was replaced by a fog horn and an underwater sound device. At the same time, the Finngrundet received a radio system, so that contact with land or other ships could now be made at any time. Another renovation took place in 1940. The beacon has now been electrified. The range was about eleven nautical miles . In addition, the ship received a radio beacon . In 1969 the Finngrundet was decommissioned. The function was taken over by unmanned lighthouses . From 1970 the Finngrundet then served as a museum ship.
