List of domestic dogs

The Finnish Lapphund is a Finnish breed of dog recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 5, Section 3, Standard No. 189 ), which is classified as a herding dog .

Origin and history

The origin of the Finnish Lapphund is not exactly clear. The first breed definition of the Finnish Lapphund dates back to 1945, when the name of the breed was still Lappish Shepherd Dog . The dogs were larger than today's breed and resembled the Belgian Shepherd Dog . In the 1960s, the Lappish Reindeer Dog and the Lapphund were separated into separate breeds. In today's Finnish Lapphund, the influence of the dogs from the Finnish Peski kennel from the 1970s can still be clearly felt. The official name of the breed has been Finnish Lapphund since 1993. The standard was last renewed in 1996.

description

Appearance

The Finnish Lapphund is medium-sized and strongly built, the length of the body exceeds the height at the withers . The ideal size for males is 49 cm and for bitches 44 cm, there is a tolerance of 3 cm in both directions. Generally the type is more important than the size. Particularly typey breed representatives can therefore differ slightly from the size specifications. The Finnish Lapphund weighs 12-25 kilograms. It is slightly reminiscent of a little bear.

The fur is very thick and long. The dog wears a thick and fine undercoat under the close-fitting, weatherproof top coat. All coat colors are allowed, but the basic color must predominate. For example, black furs with badges are common, but the Lapphund can also be brown, cream or wolf gray. It is characterized by a special variety of colors. The ears are erect or semi-erect, they are very mobile. The Finnish Lapphund is easy to identify as an Arctic dog breed.

The tail is carried over the back. When at rest the rod can also be carried hanging.

character

The Finnish Lapphund is first and foremost very friendly, people-oriented and sociable. He is a very peaceful dog. Nowadays he is a family dog who can be enthusiastic about many different activities. He exudes calm and serenity and is a loyal partner in every situation with good socialization. He is also independent, humble and helpful. The Finnish Lapphund adapts to different conditions and is absolutely insensitive to weather due to its almost waterproof fur. The Finnish Lapphund also has no problems in summer temperatures. Activities should, however, be moved to the morning or evening hours. The herding behavior is usually only slightly developed and the hunting instinct is only present in some dogs to a significant extent. Most Lapphunds have little to no hunting instinct and are compatible with all animals if socialization is started at a young age.

The Finnish Lapphund is generally interested in the family's activities and would like to be part of every activity. He is a companion in all situations and extremely adaptable. He is intelligent and bright, likes to learn and is quick to learn. You cannot accuse him of being overly barking. In general, he is very calm and not easily disturbed. He only barks when there really is a reason to. The Finnish Lapphund is not a barker and comes to rest quickly after being hit. He is a very social dog who feels very comfortable around people and seeks that closeness.

The Finnish Lapphund is always ready for action. With his courageous character, he follows his people in every situation. The being should be calm and eager to learn. The Finnish Lapphunds are trustworthy.

The Finnish Lapphund has been the working and companion dog of the people of Lapland for centuries and is still occasionally used as a sled dog and to herd large herds of reindeer.
