Finland Sweden in Sweden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Finland Swedes in Sweden ( Swedish : finlandssvenskar i Sverige ) are members of the Swedish- speaking minority in Finland who emigrated to Sweden . They make up about a quarter of the Finnish immigrants in Sweden. They also refer to themselves as sverigefinlandssvenskar ( German : "Schwedenfinnlandschweden").

Dispute over minority status

The interests of the minority are represented by the “Reich Association of Finland Swedes in Sweden” ( Finlandssvenskarnas Riksförbund i Sverige , FRIS for short), based in Stockholm . Their status as a minority is controversial and is rejected by the Swedish government because, unlike the Finns , they speak the same mother tongue as the majority of Swedes. The Finnish Swedish spoken by the Finnish Swedes is regarded as a linguistic variant of Swedish, but is not an independent language. However, the standard Finnish Swedish language differs in pronunciation and parts of the vocabulary from Imperial Swedish spoken in Sweden .

The Finland-Swedes, together with the national and ethnic minority of the Swedish Finns (sverigefinnar), form the group of Finnish citizens who have immigrated to Sweden, also known collectively in Swedish as sverigefinländare ("Swedish Finns ").

Strong social, cultural and economic contacts as well as linguistic closeness are the main reasons why Finland-Swedes seek refuge in Sweden. In addition, many Swedish speakers do not meet the requirements for perfect Finnish on the Finnish labor market and experience the attitude towards Swedish in Finland to some extent as hostile, even if there are regional differences. After immigrating to Sweden, many Finnish Swedes are sobering about the Swedes' lack of knowledge about their minority, which means that some of them strengthen their ties to Finland or even return to Finland after a few years.

Well known Finland Swedes in Sweden

Only after Sweden ceded Finland to Tsarist Russia in 1809, Finland-Swedes can be regarded as a minority and Finland-Swedes who emigrated to Sweden can be described as immigrants , although the Swedish term finlandssvensk ("Finnish Swedish") has only been used since the beginning of the 20th century.
