Finsbury Technical College was founded on the initiative of the City and Guilds of London Institute , an organization that has existed in the UK in the field of vocational training to this day. The official opening took place on February 19, 1883 with the handover of a newly built building, after premises of other schools had already been used for individual courses from 1878. As the first technical college in the country, founded as a reaction to the emergence of new occupational profiles through corresponding scientific and technical developments of the time, it subsequently served as a model for the creation of other comparable institutions. A number of institutions called polytechnics and comparable with universities of applied sciences emerged from these later . In 1904, the Finsbury Technical College was supplemented by an extension, which in particular contained a large technology laboratory.

The college was divided into four departments for electrical engineering , mechanical engineering , chemistry, and applied arts . It was financed through voluntary donations from the London City Companies . The founding of comparable institutions, some of which were publicly financed, led in later years to increasing competition and financial difficulties, as well as to the closure of the department for applied arts and, from 1910, to declining student numbers. In addition, there was a growing need for graduates in both the public and private sectors, which Finsbury Technical College would not have been able to meet without a fundamental reorientation. As a result of these problems, the facility was closed on July 26, 1926. Finsbury Technical College teachers included Henry Edward Armstrong , Silvanus Phillips Thompson and Gilbert Thomas Morgan .

Educational offer

Education at Finsbury Technical College included full-day pre-employment classes for students ages 14-17 and evening classes for working adults. While most day school students completed their vocational training after two or later three years and passed the relevant final exams with a certificate, for some students attending Finsbury Technical College was preparation for further courses at higher educational institutions.

The subjects included, in particular, courses in construction , design , drawing , technology , mathematics and applied natural sciences . The selection was based on the educational goals stated by the individual students when they entered school. Teachers were supposed to teach what they thought would be beneficial in terms of the content of the curriculum and were not bound by fixed curricula.
