Silvanus Phillips Thompson (born June 19, 1851 in York , England , † June 12, 1916 ) was an English physicist .

Life

Silvanus Philipps Thompson studied at the Flounders' Institute at Pontefract and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of London in 1869 . His position of a Science Master , which he held in the Bootham School , which he had previously attended, from 1873-1874, he gave up to devote himself to further chemical and physical studies at the Royal School of Mines in London .

From 1876 Thompson was a lecturer and from 1878 professor of experimental physics at University College in Bristol , where he set up the physics laboratory. From 1885 he was director and professor of physics at Finsbury Technical College in Finsbury (London) and from 1891 Fellow of the Royal Society . He was also a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and Vice President of the Physical Society of London .

Thompson wrote a large number of papers in the field of experimental physics, especially electricity and optics , he improved in 1881 the Glan-Thompson prism developed by Paul Glan the year before .

Thompson's most famous publications include Calculus made easy from 1910, as well as the biographies of Lord Kelvin , Michael Faraday and Philipp Reis . Thompson was the first president of the Röntgen Society (later: British Institute of Radiology ).
