Paul Glan (born February 26, 1846 in Berlin ; † August 8, 1898 there ) was a German physicist , meteorologist and university professor .

Life

Paul Glan grew up in Berlin, where he attended the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium and subsequently the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität (today Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin ). There he received his doctorate in 1870 and later worked as a private lecturer in physics.

Services

Already in his doctorate “About the absolute phase changes through reflection” Glan showed an interest in optical phenomena.

Glan is best known as the namesake of various prisms that are used to polarize light. The principle, which is based on birefringence and total reflection , was introduced by him in 1880, the Glan-Thompson prism was improved by Silvanus Phillips Thompson in 1881, the Glan-Taylor prism was improved by AM Taylor in 1948, and the Glan-Foucault also exists prism and Glan-laser prism .
