The Finstere Tanne is a 519.9 m high mountain in the southeast of the Waltershausen foothills , which are in front of the Thuringian Forest to the north.

The Finstere Tanne represents the highest elevation of a small mountainous area within the Waltershausen foothills , which is bordered by the three villages of Waltershausen , Bad Tabarz and Friedrichroda . It is located in the district of Gotha in the area of the city of Waltershausen, almost 3 km south-southwest of the city center.
To the east of it, the bathing water flows to the north, to the west the Laucha .
