The Deutschlandhaus is a building built in the 1920s in the Westend district of Berlin , on the southern edge of Theodor-Heuss-Platz . The original usage concept included hotels, cafes and shops. Today the listed building is characterized by extensive office use and retail space.

history

The six-storey building was built from 1928 to 1931 according to plans by Heinrich Straumer, together with the Amerikahaus on what was then Reichskanzlerplatz . The building contractor for the Heinrich Mendelssohn project had the two six-story commercial buildings built in the New Objectivity style.

In 1937 the Deutschlandhaus was expanded by the Deutsche Reichspost for television purposes. The television station installed in the tower of the America House went into operation in 1938 and regular studio operations began on November 1, 1938. In 1943 the transmitter was destroyed by Allied bombs , but the building was only slightly damaged. In 1954, the Sender Freies Berlin acquired the Deutschlandhaus for the newly established television department, only to start operations a year later. In 1970 the television department of the SFB moved into the newly built SFB television center next to the broadcasting house.

Until the political turnaround , the Deutschlandhaus housed the German Film and Television Academy Berlin , the Deutsche Kinemathek and Deutsche Welle .

The building was renovated again during that time and is now the headquarters of various companies. In 2004 there was also a gallery in the building. To the right of the entrance was a memorial plaque with the inscription “DEUTSCHLANDHAUS BUILT 1929–1931 BY HEINRICH MENDELSSOHN WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF ARCHITECT HEINRICH STRAUMER PROF. DR. ING. HC ”let into the facade.
