Fire is a free instant messenger for Mac OS X (version ≥10.1) for various protocols. The software was released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Access to the various networks takes place exclusively through free, GPL-licensed program libraries such as firetalk, libfaim, libicq2000, libmsn, XMPP and libyahoo2.

history

Eric Peyton wanted an instant messaging client for the new operating system right from the start of the Mac OS X beta phase . He started development based on a program for OPENSTEP, on which he had already worked, which could connect to AIM servers using an open source library . He transferred this to OS X's Cocoa programming interface . The first version was released on April 1, 1999. It was the first multi-protocol client on Mac OS X to support IRC , XMPP , AIM, ICQ , .NET Messenger Service (MSN), Yahoo Messenger, and Bonjour . Apple promoted it as a cornerstone of the Mac OS X 10.0 software ecosystem. Initially, Peyton developed and distributed it as a private project, until he founded Epicware around it. Support for communicating with multiple networks has been added to the application. First came support for Yahoo! and ICQ, later IRC, MSN and XMPP (Jabber), most recently for Bonjour. In 2001, Colter Reed joined the project as a regular contributing developer. Development was later shifted to SourceForge , which was first published on November 5, 2001 (version 0.28a). The last stable version (1.5.6) was released on February 15, 2006; besides this, there is also an unfinished development version of a 2.x version line. On February 23, the discontinuation of the project was announced due to the lack of developers and the libraries used are no longer being developed.

Two of the developers have switched to Adium , which is also recommended as a replacement. A migration function has been integrated into Adium, which makes it easier to adopt settings.
