Firechat (proper spelling firechat ) is an instant messaging - service that is offered by the manufacturer Open Garden since April, 2014. The technology also works to a limited extent without an Internet or telephone connection. This is done via a meshed network in which devices on which the program is installed establish a decentralized network via Bluetooth , WLAN or Multipeer Connectivity from Apple , via which the messages are passed on from the sender to the recipient.

Private messages receive end-to-end encryption .

In April 2020, the software was no longer available in the Apple Appstore. A new registration with an existing installation is no longer possible and the manufacturer's website can no longer be accessed.

Use to bypass network barriers

The application was used with great media interest in Iraq, where the use of the Internet is severely restricted by the local government. During the protests in Hong Kong in the second half of 2014, the authorities repeatedly switched off the cell phone network in order to prevent the demonstrators from communicating. In response, Firechat became an important means of communicating the protests.
