Hermann Gries

Hermann Gries (born September 17, 1810 in Hamburg ; † November 11, 1892 ibid) was a German lawyer and the last senior senior secretary in Hamburg.

Life

Gries was a son of the Hamburg lawyer Johann Ludwig Gries (1770-1826) and his wife Amalie Cordes (1779-1851), the youngest daughter of the councilor Johann Diederich Cordes (1730-1813). He was married to Susanne Kunhardt (1827–1872), daughter of the elder Carl Philipp Kunhardt (1782–1854). His sister Johanna (1800–1863) was married to the senior secretary Nicolaus Adolf Westphalen (1793–1854). The Senate Syndicate Johann Michael Gries (1772–1827) and the translator Johann Diederich Gries (1775–1842) were his uncles.

Gries received his education at the learned school of the Johanneum and from 1829 at the academic high school in Hamburg. He then studied law and graduated in 1834 with a doctorate in law . In the same year he returned to his hometown and was here on 2 May 1834 lawyer admitted. In 1838 he succeeded Immanuel Wohlwill as librarian of the Patriotic Society of 1765 . In 1854 he was elected senior secretary and was introduced to his office on December 22, 1854. He administered this office, with which the office of court master at the Hospital of the Holy Spirit is connected, until the end of his life in 1892, making him the last senior senior secretary in Hamburg. His post has not been refilled. Gries was buried in the old cemetery in Hamm .
