from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nicolaus Adolf Westphalen (* May 7, 1793 in Hamburg ; † September 23, 1854 ibid) was a German lawyer and senior senior secretary of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Life

Westphalen was born in Hamburg and attended the Johanneum School of Academics from 1805 to 1812 . He then studied jurisprudence at the Georg-August University Göttingen , received his doctorate there on March 8, 1820 to Dr. iur. utr. and on May 26th of the same year settled down as a lawyer in Hamburg.

In 1845 he was substituted for disability cases because of the increasing sickness of the senior senior secretary Ferdinand Beneke (1774-1848). At his request, he was appointed as an adjunct on December 10, 1847 and succeeded him on March 1, 1848 after Beneke's death. Westphalen held this position until his death on September 23, 1854. His brother-in-law Hermann Gries (1810-1892) was chosen as his successor .

His relief portrait is in the hall of the Hamburg City Hall .

Create

In addition to his office, Westphalen prepared scientific papers on the old Hamburg constitution and administration and their historical development. After he had published posthumous writings of the Gries family, including the Commentar on Hamburg City Law from 1603 , his two main works appeared in the years 1841 to 1846: Hamburg's constitution and administration in their gradual development up to the most recent times and history of the main basic laws of Hamburg Constitution . The first work in particular, valuable also because Westphalen was able to use the as yet undiminished holdings of the State Archives before the fire in 1842 , is essential for historical knowledge of the subject matter.

family

Nicolaus Adolf Westphalen came from an old Hamburg merchant family and was born as the youngest of six children of the Hamburg merchant Libert Westphalen (1750–1813) and Catharina Eding (1754–1806), daughter of senior Lucas Hinrich Eding (1717–1790).

On January 10, 1829, he married Johanna Gries (1800–1863), daughter of the lawyer Johann Ludwig Gries (1770–1826) and the senator's daughter Amalie Cordes (1779–1851). From this marriage 3 sons and 2 daughters were born.

The astronomer Hermann Libert Westphalen (1822–1846) was his nephew.
