Fisheries Sanctuary
Fisheries sanctuaries are areas in which the protection of fish and their spawning should be guaranteed. In addition to nature reserves for animal and plant species, sanctuaries are designated especially for fish. These differ in fish sanctuary and spawning sanctuary.
Fischschonbezirke
Fish sanctuaries are areas used by fish as a route from one area to another. These can be narrow spaces between two mainland areas, fairways or estuaries. Due to the narrowness, there is a high density of fish in these water areas. In order to protect the fish stocks in these areas, the authorities designate them as fish protection districts. In these protection zones, fishing is prohibited at certain times or all year round.
Spawning sanctuaries
Spawning sanctuaries refer to the spawning of fish. Each species of fish has preferred spawning areas where a high population can be found during the spawning season. In order to protect the fish stocks and to prevent them from being fished before spawning, the authorities designate certain sanctuaries for spawning. Fishing in these areas is mostly prohibited from April 1st to May 31st.
In addition to the locally defined protection zones, the closed seasons of the respective fish species must be observed, which relate to the spawning seasons and do not contain any local restrictions.
Legal bases
The establishment of sanctuaries in Germany is subject to the law of the respective federal state. Typically the respective state fisheries law regulates which authorities are allowed to set up sanctuaries according to which rules.
