Fish Town is a city in the east of the West African Republic of Liberia , it is located near the border with the Republic of Ivory Coast .
history
Fish Town is located in the settlement area of the Grebo, one of the indigenous peoples of the Pepper Coast , who were in contact with European traders early on and who dared to defend their acquired independence by force of arms against the American-Liberian settlers and the central government in Monrovia . It was not until 1933 that President Edwin Barclay succeeded in pacifying Grebo permanently. These uprisings and raids on plantations and mission stations are known as Kru-War . Fish Town is the most important place in the hinterland of the former state of Maryland in Liberia . The region was initially the border area between the counties of Maryland and Grand Gedeh , it was upgraded by President Tubman during an administrative reform initiated in 1964 through the creation of River Gee County . The city of Fish Town was defended against the rebels of Charles Taylor for a few days by government troops of President Samuel K. Does during the First Liberian Civil War , after which the city was destroyed and looted. During the Second Liberian Civil War, Fish Town was in a relatively safe zone. The region around Fish Town, however, is still one of the underdeveloped regions of Liberia, and the economy , which has hitherto been based on subsistence farming , needs further support.
