Lake Fitri is a lake in the center of Chad .

geography

It is located about 300 km east of N'Djamena and 100 km west of the city of Ati in the Batha region , in the center of the Bulala settlement area .

The area of the lake is usually around 500 km 2 , which is roughly the size of Lake Constance. However, it can triple in rainy years. The freshwater lake is shallow and is fed by seasonal rains and tributaries from its 70,000 km² catchment area. The largest inflow is the seasonal Batha River (Bahr el Batha), which brings water from the Wadai massif from the east and flows into a delta .

The most important settlement on the shores of the lake is Yao , capital of the former Sultanate of Yao .

Hydrology

economy

The lake is an important source of food for the local population as more than 3,000 tons of fish are caught in it each year.

natural reserve

The lake was declared a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention in 1990 , this area extends over 1,950 km² around the lake.
