Lake Fitri is a lake in the center of Chad .
geography
It is located about 300 km east of N'Djamena and 100 km west of the city of Ati in the Batha region , in the center of the Bulala settlement area .
The area of the lake is usually around 500 km 2 , which is roughly the size of Lake Constance. However, it can triple in rainy years. The freshwater lake is shallow and is fed by seasonal rains and tributaries from its 70,000 km² catchment area. The largest inflow is the seasonal Batha River (Bahr el Batha), which brings water from the Wadai massif from the east and flows into a delta .
The most important settlement on the shores of the lake is Yao , capital of the former Sultanate of Yao .
Hydrology
The salinity of the lake is like other Sahelian lakes in the Chad Basin low. In the vernacular of Lake Fitri is the little brother of the Lake Chad called, with whom he in the age of Tschadien to 5,000 years ago, part of the Mega-Lake Chad was.
Similar to other lakes in Chad, Lake Fitri is not quite as big as it used to be. In addition, the normally permanent lake can fall completely dry in severe periods of drought, such as at the beginning of the 20th century and 1984/85.

The lake is an important source of food for the local population as more than 3,000 tons of fish are caught in it each year.

The lake was declared a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention in 1990 , this area extends over 1,950 km² around the lake.
