Fyodor Krestjanin ( Russian Фёдор Крестьянин ; * around 1540 in Moscow ; † around 1607 ibid) was a Russian church singer and composer.

Life

Time until May 1606

Little is known about Krestjanin's life. He was a priest and was trained in Old Russian church singing in Veliky Novgorod by the singing master Savva Rogov .

From the beginning of the 1570s, he lived at the court of the Tsar Ivan IV , in Aleksandrova Sloboda . After the court moved to Moscow in 1581, he remained in the service of the tsar.

In May 1606 he became archpriest, Protopope , of the Annunciation Cathedral in the Kremlin and in this function he held the services in the tsar's chambers and exercised the position associated with the position as confessor of the tsar called False Dimitrij . He had an important role at his wedding to Marina Mniszech in May of that year. On May 7th, he was among those who invited the tsar to the Assumption Cathedral and brought the wedding crown there. At the end of the mass he celebrated the wedding rites. As archpriest he also taught the tsar's choirs.

Time from June 1606

On June 1, 1606 Dimitrij's successor Vasily IV was crowned and at his wedding on June 14, 1606 Krestjanin was no longer involved as archpriest. He also no longer held the office of confessor of the tsar, but continued to teach the choirs. This is still documented on August 4, 1607. After that, his name no longer appears in the sources.

Fyodor Krestjanin wrote twelve unanimous stichiry (hymns of praise), which are a Russian version of the Byzantine mensural chant . He is at the beginning of the development of an independent Russian church music.
