The flag cichlid ( Mesonauta festivus ) is a freshwater ornamental fish from the family of cichlids (Cichlidae). It comes from rivers in the Amazon basin , especially the Rio Paraná basin, in the area of the South American countries Brazil , Peru and Bolivia .
Flag cichlids grow to a size of 12 to 15 cm, with the females remaining smaller than the males. The males can be recognized by the slightly more protruding "nose". The animals are comparatively peaceful for cichlids and can be socialized well with sailfish , for example .
It is possible to breed the flag cichlid in the aquarium . The animals are open brooders who take care of their brood and guard their 300 to 500 eggs per clutch and later the hatched young. The fry can easily be raised with Artemia .
