The flag fins (Aulopidae) are a family of lizard fish relatives (Aulopiformes). There are twelve species and four genera.

distribution

Flag rafts not only live in tropical and subtropical regions of the Atlantic and Pacific, but also in the Mediterranean . Their habitat are the soft soils of the continental shelf . They are particularly common off Madeira , the Canary Islands and the coast of northwestern Africa.

Appearance

Flag fins are slender, elongated in shape, their bodies are covered by round or comb scales. The number of vertebrae is 36–53. The predatory fish have a large head, large eyes and a deeply split mouth. They become 20 to 60 centimeters long. The dorsal fin is large and is located on the front third of the body. The pelvic and anal fins are also large. Flag fins have an adipose fin .
