Flair bartending

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term flair bartending describes the artistic presentation of work at the bar . Flair bartending is also known under the terms show bartending , freestyle, show mixing and show bartending . Here, bottles are juggled , thrown and a cocktail is mixed in an artistic way.

Flair bartending

Flair bartending is divided into the areas of show flair (exhibition flair) and working flair .

Show flair

Show flair is the type of flair bartending that is done for entertainment and competitions. It generally involves longer, well-rehearsed movements. Show flair usually requires special preparation and placement of the bottles and other accessories. Show flair often includes tricks and movements with several bottles or shakers. Juggling is a popular example of show flair in the US . For show flair , bottles with a content of 4 cl are mostly  used. This type of mixing is primarily about the show and less about the production. The bottles are only slightly filled to reduce weight and improve flight characteristics.

Working flair

When working flair normally work with full and half-full bottles as the regular working conditions of a bartender complies. It's a mix of show and the effective production of cocktails. Work is done with quick, easy and simple movements that can be carried out without sacrificing service. Arbeitsflair usually includes glasses, a bottle, bottle and shaker, sets or occasionally two bottles. The characters are usually less daring in working flair so as not to endanger guests, and of course the drink should be ready in a reasonable time.

Flair bartending bottles made of very robust hard plastic are used for exercise.

Origin and history

Flair bartending, then still called Olympic bartending, emerged in the USA in the late 70s and early 80s as an additional attraction for guests in bars and entertainment venues. The system gastronomy chain TGI Fridays (Thank God it's Fridays), which made this artistic preparation of a cocktail part of its concept, also played a very important role in spreading the flair bartending . This concept by TGI Fridays included very intensive training for the bartender in the classic area and also in show bartending.

Competitions and Organizations

In addition to working at the bar, where many bartenders emphasize their work with flair inserts, there are flair bartending competitions around the world. The German Barkeeper Union (DBU) has been organizing its own flairting competition as part of the World Cocktail Competition for 10 years. Separate rules set by the International Bartenders Association apply to the flairtending competitions . In 1997 a separate organization was founded to represent the interests and network for flair bartending, the Flair Bartenders' Association (FBA).

reception

Flair bartending as an independent show discipline was best known in Europe through the film Cocktail . Bryan Brown and Tom Cruise were trained for the juggling numbers by JB Bandy, who had previously created training videos for learning flair bartending for the restaurant chain TGI Friday's.
