Location of the flak barracks in Bavaria

The anti-aircraft barracks in the Augsburg district of Kriegshaber is a former barracks , the construction of which was started by the Wehrmacht before the start of the Second World War , but was no longer completed. After the end of the war, the area was used by the US Army . After their withdrawal, the 29.1  hectare site has been gradually being redesigned into a residential and commercial area for several years.

history

The construction of the barracks for the anti-aircraft artillery of the Luftwaffe began in 1936, but could no longer be completed at the end of the Second World War. The advancing US Army took over the site in 1945. A trade fair was subsequently set up in the former staff building . Initially, units of the 5th Infantry Division were housed in the flak barracks , which were then replaced on March 5, 1956 by parts of the 11th Airborne Division as part of the "Operation Gyroscope". On July 1, 1958, this division was dissolved and reorganized as the 24th Infantry Division , the headquarters of which was then located in the anti-aircraft barracks.

After the US Army withdrew in the mid-1990s, the "Augsburger Gesellschaft für Stadtentwicklung und Immobilienbetreuung GmbH", a subsidiary of the Augsburg housing company , became the owner. In the years that followed, a development plan was drawn up which, as the so-called “Kobelcenter Süd”, provided for a mixed residential and commercial development. Much of the planned construction work has now been completed.

In close proximity to each other are two buildings of the former barracks, which have been given a new use. A former tank hall houses the Kriegshaber volunteer fire brigade and the chapel is used by the Greek Orthodox community of Augsburg.

Use as accommodation for asylum seekers

Some of the buildings of the former barracks have not yet been demolished and are currently used as accommodation for 300 to 400 exclusively male asylum seekers . The majority of the residents are from Iraq . The accommodation hit the headlines several times because some of the asylum seekers went on hunger strike to protest the poor conditions there and eventually threatened to close the accommodation for a while. In June 2011 it became known that the asylum seekers' home will continue to operate for the time being; A few days later, some rooms in the building were completely destroyed in a fire. At the end of 2011, the property closed due to urban development measures. The building was completely demolished in 2015 and new office and residential buildings were built here from 2017.
