The Flat River is a right tributary of the South Nahanni River in the Canadian Northwest Territories .
The Flat River has its origin in Mirror Lake north of Tungsten not far from the border with the Yukon Territory . It flows in a south-easterly direction through the mountains and passes the town of Tungsten. Its valley forms the boundary between the Selwyn Mountains to the west and the Backbone Ranges to the east . About 80 km downstream is Seaplane Lake , a starting point for canoe tours on the lower reaches of the Flat River. After another 20 km the Flat River reaches the Nahanni National Park Reserve . The river now flows a bit to the north, then turns again to the east and finally flows into the South Nahanni River after about 220 km 20 km below the Virginia Falls .
The Flat River is a white water river with rapids of difficulty levels II – V. The Cascade-of-the-Thirteen-Steps is a special obstacle on the course of the river, which can be bypassed using portage .
