Snow lichen ( Flavocetraria nivalis )

The genus Flavocetraria includes three species of shrub lichen with pale yellowish lobes that were originally included in the genus Cetraria . They are widespread in the arctic-alpine region, but are also found sporadically in the southern hemisphere. Two types, the hooded lichen and the snow lichen , also occur in Central Europe.

description

The lichens of the genus Flavocetraria are ground-dwelling shrub lichens. They grow upright with flat or tubular, sparsely branched lobes. Your photobionts belong to the algae genus Trebouxia . There are pseudocyphella on the underside of the lobes . The species of the genus have brown, terminal apothecia , which, however, occur only rarely. The ascospores are unicellular and ellipsoid. The marginal, black pycnidia produce small, dumbbell-shaped pycnospores. All styles include & a. the usnic acid .

Systematics and Etymology

In 1994, Kärnefelt and Thell placed the pale yellowish lichen , which is similar to Icelandic moss , in their own genus Flavocetraria . The type species is the hooded lichen Flavocetraria cucullata . The name Flavocetraria is derived from the Latin word flavus = yellow and the genus Cetraria . The name Cetraria comes from the Latin word caetra = small, light leather shield and refers to the fact that the storage sections of the Icelandic moss are often shiny brown.
