Flavocetraria nivalis, also known as snow lichen , is a shrub lichen .

description

At the base, the pale green-yellowish snow lichen, which grows upright and curly, is yellow-brown in color. The pith is whitish in color. The individual bearing tabs have an angular, wrinkled surface, which consists of slightly flattened to concave, non-runny sections. The lobes are 2 - 10 mm wide.

It can easily be confused with the hooded lichen ( Flavocetraria cucullata ), the lobes of which are almost tubularly rolled up against the base and smooth inside.

Occurrence

The lichen occurs in a circumpolar manner in the tundra of the northern hemisphere as well as in the mountains of lower elevations such as the Himalayas, Alps, Pyrenees, Rocky Mountains, Appalachians, etc. In the southern hemisphere, occurrences in Peru as well as in Chile and Argentina have been detected so far. It grows between and on rocky surfaces, it also prefers uneven grasslands. The lichen species is a typical representative of dwarf shrub heaths exposed to the wind , which lack a protective snow cover even in winter.

Others

In Bolivia, a tea made from this lichen is touted against altitude sickness and heart problems. The species is under nature protection in Germany .
