The red mullet ( Barbodes binotatus , Syn . : Barbus binotatus , Puntius binotatus ) is a freshwater fish from the carp family (Cyprinidae). Its distribution area extends from Myanmar to the Mekong river basin , the Great Sunda Islands , Bangka , Belitung and Bali .
features
The spotted mullet becomes 18 to 20 centimeters long. Their bodies are much slimmer than most other barbodes . The basic color is silver, the back is olive, the sides of the body have a bluish shimmer. The dorsal and caudal fins are reddish and have a dark edge, the anal fin is whitish and often covered with reddish spots. Depending on the age, black spots appear in different arrangements and sizes. Young fish have a spot below the first rays of the dorsal fin, one above the front part of the anal fin, two on the sides of the body and another on the tail fin stalk. When they reach sexual maturity, the spot above the anal fin recedes and the spots on the sides of the body combine to form a longitudinal ligament. At spawning time, the females grow thick and have yellowish fins.
