Blotchy strip bug

The spotty strip bug ( Graphosoma semipunctatum ) is a type of bug from the subfamily Podopinae , which belongs to the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The bugs reach a body length of 10–12 mm. The species is closely related to the strip bug ( Graphosoma lineatum ). It differs from this by the interrupted black stripes on the pronotum, which form ten spots. In addition, their basic color is orange, while that of the strip bug is more reddish. Another difference is the color of the legs, which is reddish in the spotted stripe bug and black in the stripe bug. The underside of the mottled strip bug is spotted black.

Subspecies or closely related species

In the Canary Islands there is a population of bedbugs, which some authors consider to be the subspecies Graphosoma semipunctatum interruptum , but which others consider to be a separate species, Graphosoma interruptum White , 1839. A distinguishing feature is the color of the connexive (part of the abdomen that is visible on the side), which in the spotty strip bug has a broad reddish or yellowish edge, while in this population it is narrow and pale. Other distinguishing features include: The black longitudinal bands on the pronotum are never broken up into individual spots, the black longitudinal stripes on the label are not shortened. Other differences exist in the shape of the head and genital segments.

Another population from the Greek island of Crete , which is said to differ among other things by slightly smaller body size, shorter head and longer second antenna segment , was described as the species Graphosoma creticum Horváth , 1909; this is now considered a synonym.

Way of life

The species occurs in the Palearctic . It is common and widespread in southern Europe. The northern limit of distribution in Central Europe reached Carinthia and Moravia in the 19th century, data from this period also exist for Switzerland and Bavaria. These northern outposts are believed to have all died before 1900. A statement from 1970 for the city of Vienna turned out to be an error. The spotty strip bug is usually found on umbellifers (Apiaceae), which are their main forage plants. The adult bugs fly in late summer.

Taxonomy

The species was first described as Cimex semipunctatus Fabricius , 1775. In addition to the spelling Graphosoma semipunctata , the following other synonyms are known from the literature : Graphosoma wilsoni White , 1839, Graphosoma stali Horváth , 1882. Numerous color variants have been described as varieties , these are now considered to be taxonomically without value.
