The Tile Museum Hamburg - Tiles and their processing from 1900 is a private museum of the Fliesenhandel Schittek GmbH, which is operated at the company's headquarters in Hamburg .

description

The tile museum was opened in the company's own premises in 2007 after the company moved to Hamburg-Sinstorf . The scientific and artistic direction of the construction was with Konrad Schittek .

The German tile and bathing culture from around 1900 is shown in the 250 m² permanent exhibition . In particular, the museum shows the development of tiles from the early industrial era in the style of Art Nouveau and Art Deco to ultra-modern industrial tiles in large format. A large part of the exhibition is devoted to tools, machines and the work of the tiler . In 2010, in collaboration with the art historian Birte Gaethke, the special exhibition Hamburg Wall Flowers - Art Nouveau Tiles was shown in Hamburg house entrances . This exhibition dealt particularly with the Art Nouveau tiles in Hamburg houses. Special events such as guided tours and lectures are offered regularly.

Exhibits

The fashionable and technical development of tiles and the laying of tiles can be traced back to fully furnished and partially functioning bathrooms. In addition to the tiles, the sanitary installations and the appropriate tools of the tiler are shown.

A tiled stove from Meißen is also on display as well as a Hamburg tiled stove in a typical kitchen from around 1900. The collection shows how the tiles found their way into bathrooms, kitchens and houses. There are Kupferbadeöfen shown catalogs and master craftsmen from different eras.

In the museum there are also ceramic works of art such as a tile series by Salvador Dalí , tiles by the famous painter Hilde Hamann , building ceramics by Richard Kuöhl and mosaics by Puhl & Wagner .
