Flight of the Intruder is a flight simulator developed by Rowan Software and published in 1990 by Spectrum HoloByte for PC (DOS) , Commodore Amiga and Atari ST . In 1991 it wasportedto the Nintendo Entertainment System by Imagineering as developer and Mindscape as publisherand cameto Europeunder the name Phantom Air Mission . It is based on the novel Flight of the Intruder by Stephen Coonts , which was releasedin cinemasaround the same time under the name Flight through Hell . It waspicked up by the pressas the successor to the first part of the Falcon series , but never became known as a single title.

technology

The game graphics are implemented in polygonal vector graphics , bitmaps are only used for explosions and countermeasures , which are not scaled with the distance. The game is displayed in 16 colors and 320 × 200 pixels (EGA).

Gameplay

The player has the choice of either flying a Grumman A-6 or a McDonnell F-4 against targets in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam as part of the Vietnam War . The challenge lay in the comprehensive opposing defense measures as well as in the strict rules of engagement of the conflict. Realistic features of the game include unreliable missiles, the phantom's smoking engines, and decoys . A wide range of missions can be flown. Simple bomb attacks or CAP are just as possible as complex SEAD missions that require the precisely coordinated interaction of several elements.

The player can plan every mission in detail. Based on the available aircraft, each weapon station of each aircraft can be assigned individually. A mission editor can be used to change waypoints or to determine how the allied units should behave there. However, there is also the option of using ready-made plans and armaments.

In flight, the player can switch between his own planes at will, and either take control or watch the AI . The game also has a time-lapse feature, which can be used to shorten long, uneventful flight segments, but which stops as soon as enemies are nearby.

The cockpits, especially the various operating modes and setting options for the radar and bomb target systems, are designed in detail. The game offers different levels of difficulty and realism and a thick manual to help the player get started.

Landings on your own aircraft carrier can be flown "by hand" or by the AI. Due to the freedom of movement of the opposing AI, however, each mission must be flown to the end if you want to be sure not to be shot down after all.

There is a multiplayer mode in which one of the players can also play the opposite side. He then flies a MiG-21 , but in the cockpit it looks exactly like the F-4.

Storyline

There is no storyline implemented in the game, it is up to the player to project the events of the book onto the game. The missions start with the Tonkin incident and you then work your way step by step through the various phases of the air war over Vietnam.
