Stephen Coonts

Stephen Coonts (born July 19, 1946 ) is an American writer .

Life

Stephen Coonts grew up in a mining village in West Virginia and graduated from the University of West Virginia with a degree in political science in 1968 . He joined the Navy the following year and was trained as a pilot. During the Vietnam War he was on the USS Enterprise and flew the A-6 Intruder attack aircraft from 1971 to 1973 . After that he was a flight instructor for the A-6 on the USS Nimitz until 1977 .

After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1977, he first worked briefly as a taxi driver and police officer. He began studying law , which he graduated in 1979. He ended up working as a legal advisor to various oil and gas companies. He also began to write on the side.

He first published a number of short stories before writing his first novel, Flight of the Intruder, based in part on his experiences during the Vietnam War. The novel became a bestseller and initiated Coont's career as a novelist. He used the protagonist of his first book, Jake Grafton, for other adventure novels, which mainly deal with military aviation. He also wrote other series of novels and individual works.

Seventeen of his twenty novels were New York Times bestsellers.

In 1991 his first novel " Flight of the Intruder " (German title:. Flight of the Intruder ), directed by John Milius with Danny Glover , Willem Dafoe and Brad Johnson filmed.

Stephen Coonts married Deborah Buell in 1995. The couple have a son and live in Las Vegas , Nevada .
