Coordinates: 20 ° 50 ′  S , 144 ° 12 ′  E The Shire of Flinders is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 41,200 km² and has about 1500 inhabitants.

The Shire is located in the northern half of the state about 1,160 km northwest of the capital Brisbane .

The largest city and the administrative seat of the LGA is the city of Hughenden with about 1050 inhabitants. Other localities are Dutton River, Porcupine, Prairie, Stamford, Tangorin and Torrens Creek.

history

Queensland's longest river that flows through the Shire is named after explorer Matthew Flinders . From 1863 the fertile region was settled and from 1882 a local administration was installed in Hughenden. In 1887 the city and the surrounding area were separated and in 1915 the area was divided into Richmond Shire and Flinders Shire. In 1958, Hughenden returned to Flinders as its administrative headquarters.

The Flinders Shire Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
