Hughenden is a small town in Queensland , Australia . Hughenden is about 1,440 kilometers northwest of the capital Brisbane , about 380 kilometers west of Townsville and about 520 kilometers east of Mount Isa . It is the seat of the Local Administrative Area (LGA) Flinders Shire Council .
Hughenden is on the banks of the Flinders River and is the administrative center of the Flinders Shire. The city of Hughenden has a population of about 1,100 and the entire Shire is home to about 1,300. In the city, the Flinders Highway , which leads in an east-west direction from Townsville to Cloncurry , and the Kennedy Developmental Road , which leads in a north-south direction from Cairns to Winton , meet.
Hughenden got its name from the first settlers in the area. They named the place after Hughenden Manor , a palace complex in England and the residence of the former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli .
The area around Hughenden is characterized by large farms for raising cattle and sheep. However, the number of animals fluctuates greatly, as the supply of feed depends directly on the annual rainfall. Long dry periods on the one hand and floods after heavy rainfall on the other hand are normal in this area. For this very reason, apart from animal husbandry, there is hardly any agriculture.
At the center of Hughenden is a replica of a Muttaburrasaurus . A skeleton of this dinosaur was found at Muttaburra south of Hughenden in 1963. More dinosaur bones and teeth have been found in the Hughenden area. Today Hughenden has an annual dinosaur festival.
