Flipboard is a social messaging app for Android , iOS , Windows Phone, and Windows . There is also a website .

It gathers content from social media and other websites that have partnered with Flipboard and presents that content in the form of a magazine. The user can flip through the pages. The app is developed by Flipboard Inc. , a US software company founded by Mike McCue and Evan Doll. The company is headquartered in Palo Alto , California .

user interface

The user interface of Flipboard is designed for browsing the content. The user can select and subscribe to various topics via the "Content Guide". These topics include news, social media, and videos. These are displayed on the homepage.

history

invention

Flipboard was invented during a “brainstorming” session between McCue and Doll in which they pondered what a redesigned Internet might look like.

development

Originally developed only for the iPad , the application was expanded in December 2011 by adding support for the iPhone and iPod touch . On May 3, 2012, Flipboard Inc. announced a version for some Android smartphones , starting with the Samsung Galaxy S3 . A short time later, on May 30, 2012, a beta version for all Android cell phones was made available on the Flipboard website . The finished version has been available for download on Google Play since June 22, 2012 . On June 26, 2013, Flipboard was announced for Windows 8. Flipboard has also been available as a website since February 10, 2015 .

The app is updated regularly . This includes the integration of Google+ , YouTube and own editions for other languages. The app was recently optimized for Android tablets. From version 2.0 users can create their own magazines. They are generated either by app or in the browser with the help of a bookmarklet and can be edited using a web-based editor. After only two weeks, over 500,000 magazines were created by users. The last major change to the app was presented in July 2013. Since then, users have been able to share magazines generated with the Flipboard app on iOS or Android for viewing in a standard web browser . Viewers do not need to be registered with Flipboard .

According to the developer, Flipboard had over 20 million users in August 2012. In 2013 it was over 53 million. CEO Mike McCue said in 2015 that Flipboard now has over 70 million monthly active users. In 2018, Flipboard had 145 million monthly active users, around a third of whom were from Europe.

censorship

On May 15, 2011, Flipboard was blocked by the Great Firewall of the People's Republic of China . McCue confirmed this on Twitter . Flipboard then published its first edition for China. Since February 2012, Flipboard has censored itself if the user from China accesses the app. The user cannot access Facebook from China via the application and also cannot access Twitter on iOS.

reception

The application is rated extremely positively. Apple named Flipboard the 2010 iPad App of the Year .
